29th January, 2026, Wuxi United International school were doing their Intermediate Mathematical Challenge online or in their respective IMC exam center.
UKMT encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and influency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. Among many mathematical challenges organized by UKMT, their biggest competitions are the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematical Challenge(JMC/IMC/SMC), which have over 700,000 entries from 6,000 schools each year, and are the UK’s most popular school Mathematical Challenges.
The Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC) is for students in grade 10 and below, covering some of the high school knowledge. IMC encourages students to improve their mathematical reasoning ability, understand and master higher mathematical skills. It provides advanced challenges CMO-Grade 8, HMO-Grade 9 and MMO-Grade 10 with different levels of difficulty. In UK, CMO/HMO/MMO is an invitational competition, only students with excellent results in the IMC are eligible to participate. In China, with special approval, Chinese students can directly register to participate, with the aim of enabling more students to cultivate mathematical proof reasoning skills and mathematical expression skills.
IMC and JMC are relatively similar, with the similar scope and content, but more difficult. It is a valuable opportunity for students to demonstrate their mathematical ability, and for those who are relatively weak in mathematics to broaden their mathematical thinking and develop their learning ability.
IMC’s awards are set Global Gold; Global Silver; Global Bronze; Best in School; Best in Year.
