01 Teaching shaped by learning — giving the classroom back to the students. Three requirements guided the event: teaching designed around how students learn, learning with students at the centre, and assessment that drives learning forward. Teachers were encouraged to step out of the comfort zone of teaching by experience alone, moving from experience-based instruction towards classrooms grounded in learner needs, evidence and competencies. Working from a clear reading of their students and having rehearsed their lessons carefully, the experienced teachers handed over the right to think, to explore and to speak — lessons at once inquiry-driven, tiered and personalised.

02 Assessment driving teaching — making discussion count. On the day of each showcase lesson, the head of every subject group led an immediate lesson review along four dimensions: how well the approach took root, how well each stage was delivered, how well students’ needs were served, and how effective the lesson proved to be — identifying strengths, diagnosing problems and distilling models. Every teacher in the group observed and everyone spoke, examining question design, task instructions, evaluative language, time allocation and tiered student participation one by one, so that assessment for teaching and assessment for learning truly landed.
03 Looking back and moving forward — turning reflection into action. The Chinese and English groups used the occasion to deepen their teaching research: collective lesson preparation before class, focused on close reading of the text; immediate review and on-the-spot revision the same day after class. The experienced teachers taught the first round; once the review was over they quickly revised their lesson design, and the rest of the group took over the same text in a second round within the same week — a complete loop of demonstration, diagnosis and improvement, and second practice, translating research outcomes into classroom practice without delay.
What the experienced teachers offered was not only demonstration lessons but, through this look-back-and-move-forward approach to research, genuine growth for every teacher who held up a mirror to their own practice. Going forward, each subject group will organise lesson cases and build up shared resources, carrying the thinking behind these showcase lessons into the everyday classroom as a habit of practice.
