On the morning of April 7, 2025, all staff and students of Wuxi United International School gathered on the playground for a flag-raising ceremony themed “Knowledgeable.” The event was co-hosted by Grade 9 students Ella and Engel, guiding everyone to reflect deeply on the nature and significance of knowledge.
The ceremony began in a solemn atmosphere. All teachers and students stood at attention, facing the national flag, and sang the national anthem with pride. The flag bearers marched with determination as the Flag rose steadily, showcasing the vibrant spirit of the community.

Centered on the theme “Knowledgeable,” the hosts elaborated on the core concepts of the IB Program’s “Theory of Knowledge (TOK).” TOK does not merely impart knowledge but encourages students to explore “how we understand the world,” examining the essence of knowledge through multiple dimensions such as reason, emotion, and perception, thereby fostering critical thinking and interdisciplinary understanding.
Ms. Rebecca, the High School Principal, and Mr. Stuart, the TOK Coordinator, delivered inspiring speeches. Using examples like the printing press and the internet as milestones in the evolution of knowledge, they emphasized that true “knowledgeableness” in the information age lies in deep understanding and discerning truth. They called on teachers and students to embrace an open and collaborative spirit, transforming knowledge into a force for societal progress.

During the ceremony, Mr. Meng Xiaodong, Co-Principal of Wuxi United International School, presented the Special Prize certificate from the Xishan District Education and Teaching Achievement Awards to Mr. Chen Ping. Earlier, Mr. Chen had won the Special Prize for his project, “Cultivating Explorers of Artistic Beauty: 40 Years of Practice in Aesthetic Education.” This accolade not only recognizes his four decades of dedication to aesthetic education and continuous exploration but also affirms the school’s outstanding achievements in art education practices.
Educating through aesthetics, enabling every child to become an explorer of art. On the path of art education, many students begin with artistic dreams but end up as discouraged practitioners. Addressing this challenge, Mr. Chen proposed the philosophy of “cultivating explorers of artistic beauty,” breaking the constraints of traditional art teaching and providing students with broader artistic exploration opportunities. He believes that the purpose of aesthetic education is not only to develop artistic skills but also to ignite curiosity, aesthetic judgment, creative innovation, and an appreciation for beauty, empowering each student to discover themselves through exploration and grow into future citizens with creativity and critical thinking.
Over forty years, he has continually expanded the boundaries of education, publishing five professional books and over 240 articles in renowned journals such as People’s Education and Curriculum, Teaching Material, and Method. His journey has been featured in authoritative media like China Education News. Through relentless research and action, he has paved a replicable path for art education: “students grow through exploration.”
The flag-raising ceremony concluded amid deep reflection and resonance among all participants. As the hosts remarked in their closing words, “Knowledge is the cornerstone of human civilization. May we forever retain our curiosity and become lifelong learners and transmitters of wisdom in the vast ocean of knowledge.”
