In the afternoon of March 7, 2025, the teachers’ reading club of Wuxi United International School was held in the Lecture Hall on the first floor. The common reading book of this book club is Mr. Chen’s《Homeroom Teacher’s Student Management Training Manual》. At the book club, teachers talked about their thoughts on reading from different perspectives by focusing on the wonderful contents of the book and combining with their own working experience. The club is full of warm atmosphere and a constant collision of ideas, which added rich fragrance of books to this spring.
At the beginning of the activity, Mr. Meng made an inspiring speech with the question “Should I be a homeroom teacher?”in the book. He told us that homeroom teachers are not only the guides for students’ growth, but also the sharpening stones for self-improvement. Mr. Meng emphasized that being a homeroom teacher can give you an unparalleled sense of achievement, and that you can feel the value of education from the progress of your students. He encouraged every teacher to take a brave step forward and actively engage in the work of homeroom teacher.
In the teachers’ sharing session, four teachers shared their insights from different perspectives by combining their own reading experience and work practice.
Ms. Shi from the Math team shared the three points in the first two chapters of the book that impressed her the most: first, homeroom teachers can influence the growth of dozens of people, and then affect dozens of people’s lives; second, only with great love can we detect the subtle changes in students; third, finding out why students can’t learn well is the only way to reflect the level of homeroom teachers. Finally, Ms. Shi called on us to never forget our original intention in the process of education, to keep the love and responsibility for the teaching profession, and to be teachers with feelings and wisdom!
Ms. Yang from the Chinese team gave a detailed and comprehensive explanation of chapters 4 and 5 of the book, and combined them with practical cases to give illustrations and share the reading with everyone in an easy-to-understand way. Ms. Yang concluded that the emotional stability and sensitivity of homeroom teachers can not only warm themselves, but also light up the path of their students.
Ms. Xu from the Math team highlighted the communication skills in the book on teacher-student and home-school cooperaation, sharing many practical communication skills in the light of her own work practice. Ms. Xu believes that the most important thing for teachers to do when communicating with students is to maintain a positive attitude and care for students, so that students can feel valued and understood, thus promoting deeper communication.
The last one was Ms. Wang from the junior high school shared the training method of student management goals. She deeply analyzed the characteristics of contemporary teenagers, pointing out such phenomena as their early exposure to the cyber world and relatively weak sense of rules. Ms. Wang emphasized that as a homeroom teacher, you should be committed to creating a classroom environment that gives students peace of mind, emotional stability and a sense of well-being.
In the free discussion session, the teachers used the RIA reading method to think carefully and started a warm discussion around the contents of the book. Through the exchanges, teachers not only deepened their understanding of the contents of the book, but also gained more wisdom in practice.
Reading together in spring, and our heart is full of fragrance. The book club ended successfully in the teachers’ warm discussion, but the reading will not stop. Teachers will continue to insist on reading, accumulate diversified knowledge, improve professionalism, inspire educational wisdom, better carry out educational work, and help students grow through reading specialized books.
