Art is not meant to dominate the world. The intention of art it to make the world, and people’s hearts better.
I hope that a tired, sad, or exhausted person can enjoy a moment of peace in front of my paintings. Art should bridge the divide and help us enrich ourselves. The art I desire to create is one of balance, purity, and serenity.
——French artist – Henri Matisse
➤Art is a process in which students can visually construct their way of thinking. It can enrich their inner selves and spiritual world while enabling them to reach a higher level of thinking and deeper intuition. The art teachers of WUIS adhere to the teaching philosophy of integrating Chinese and Western culture, guiding students to develop the habit of independent thinking through inquiry and exploratory learning and respect each other’s ideas, and in so doing, helping each child develop their own personality and achieve their own potential. When spoken language is not enough to express a child’s emotional state the child may be able to rely on art as a vehicle for expression. Thus, the child’s artistic expression becomes a part of their holistic development. In every project, you can see the child’s personality, interests and more possibilities!

➤It is not easy to use scissors as a paintbrush. What does it look like when Matisse’s paper cutting is integrated into the creativity of children? Our grade one students learned to use scissors to cut regular and irregular shapes, admiring the works of Matisse, and bringing homage to the expression of forms in Henry Matisse’s works. The students also learn the valuable skills of independence, not just in work, but in managing themselves.

➤Some people say: “toys are the angels of children”. In every child’s life children have their favorite companions and they share a deep connection to these. Children will often assign a personality or adjust the look of these creations. Such was the case when our grade four students had the opportunity to create their own stuffed toy monsters from the symmetrical design of their names. Can you see the children’s names hidden in the dolls?

Through the primary art program in the Xiehe-group, we believe that in addition to acquiring basic knowledge and skills, the study of art encourages and helps students to better understand themselves and in so doing helps them to express, learn, think, and consider the world in a more holistic way.Through art we become better versions of ourselves.
