Traveling is more than just enjoying the beautiful view on the way.
In this summer vacation, Evan, from P1B of Wuxi United International School, once again joined her mother in international volunteer teaching. This time they chose Xinjiang as the project site. Although Evan just entered primary school, this was her third international volunteer event she had been involved in with her mother.
In the summer vacation of 2017, Evan traveled with her mother to Chiang Mai, where they cooked a big dinner for all 40 children at Chiang Mai Orphanage. This was Evan’s first time of learning and participating in volunteer activities.
In the summer vacation of 2018, Evan was finally able to officially join international volunteer activities, and the first activity she involved in was to teach in Sri Lanka There, Evan , a five and a half – year-old girl received the first volunteer certificate of her life.
In this summer vacation of 2019, Evan followed her mother on this year’s volunteer tour in Urumqi, Xinjiang. The first teaching activity was an interaction with the local children in Yining and a family visit. Because of the special circumstances of Xinjiang, they are only allowed to teach art. Most of the lessons they prepared before their trip were useless, and the materials they had to prepare for the lecture were temporarily adapted into prizes for the children.
At the second station, they went to the Kazakh herders’ settlement area under the mountains, where herders were grazing on the mountains for eight months a year, and the herders could not speak Chinese but the children could so communication was not a problem. Children also raced to each other’s talents, playing different instruments, singing and dancing in both Chinese and English. The sense of distance was eliminated.
Remembering when Evan’s mother took Evan to international volunteer activity, the official staff was also extremely worried whether Evan can bear the volunteer accommodation conditions. But again and again, Evan has proved with her actions that she is braver, stronger, and more inclusive than we thought.
To help others with a kind and loving heart is the lifetime wealth she accumulated in her volunteer activities. In the years to come she will continue to join in such activities with her mother.
“Learn to love to pay and get,
Feel the goodness of human nature,
With a rich inner world, embrace the future of infinite possibilities.”
That’s the wonderful wish Evan’s mother gave Evan, a first-year freshman.
In WUIS, we are committed to cultivating international citizens with a sense of world and empathy. Every year, in addition to the charity events organized by our school, there are many other students like Evan who actively practice philanthropy.
May the world be a better place because of each of us!
