In order to continue promoting P4C strategies in daily teaching, P4C level 1 training was held at WUIS recently. Professor Roger Sutcliffe, one of the founders of UK P4C Education Promotion and Study Center came to the site to give professional support. In the meantime, we also want to congratulate our two P4C pioneers Ms. Angel and Ms. Carol on passing their P4C level 1 trainer assessment conducted by DialogueWorks (both Uk and China) which means they have officially become P4C level 1 trainers!
P4C level 1 training implemented the way of “practice-theory-practice” to help teachers better understand P4C and other relevant educaton theories. During the training, teachers of various grade levels actively formed into communities of inquiry and shared their experience of how they integrate P4C into their subject teaching and how they enlighten students to think deeper. In the meantime, teachers also talked about how to make positive connections with people and let each individual feel respected. During the final reflection session, some teachers mentioned that they will do what they ask students to do and be a philosophical teacher who is a good thinker, listener and doer.
What is P4C ?
Philosophy for children, abbreviated to P4C, was started by Professor Matthew Lipman in the 1970s and has now been put into practice in more than 60 countries and areas. It is a teaching strategy that can be applied to all subjects, aiming to develop students’ critical, creative, caring and collaborative thinking skills and it also helps improve students’ cognitive and emotional skills. Just as American Educator John Dewey once said, education that focuses on community, communication, inquiry and attitude refactoring is beneficial to citizens who live in a constantly changing world.
