On the Assembly of Secondary on Friday, Sep.14th, Head Students and Prefects were honorably granted the Badges by Principal Ms. Lin and Vice Principal Mr. Zhou. Ms. Lin gave a inspirational speech regarding to the expectations for not only the Head Students and Prefects, but also the faculty and all students.
Grade 12 Homeroom of Mr. BM presented a wonderful assembly on the topic ‘Literacy’.
Let us first have a look at the significance of the literacy to our society.
Literacy helps us to read and write effectively or acquire the basic skills so many of us take for granted, it also improves the future of our society. Literacy is critical to economic development as well as individual and community well-beings.
Let us consider the world without literacy, what will happen? First there will be no communication at all amid the society. Then there will be social problems, the economy will be crippled, ultimately more terrible disasters will happen like wars.
Literacy is so essential to our economics development, a study concluded that even a tiny 1% increase in literacy would result in 2.5% in labour productivity with additional $32 billion to the annual GDP.
So how do we improve our literacy level, here are ten tips:
Create a reading wall, engage reluctant readers. Give students the time to properly invest in what they’re reading, set students a reading challenge, have a universal marking code.
Use improvisation and role pay, create a word carpet, take advantage of short stories, ensure mistakes are being picked up in student’s work across all subjects, make reading a habit for students.
Since literacy is so important, we need to become literate since childhood, here is a video to show the opinions of our Chinese teachers about literacy for child.
