Our Grade 5 students came to our secondary school today to learn about the independence needed in our Secondary School, Grade 6 – 12 curriculum. They experienced art classes, challenging but interactive mathematics class, a practical biology class and attended one of our Chinese Humanities classes that meets the needs of the Chinese National Curriculum requirements.
Our Secondary School ambassadors guided the students around the school and give them first hand insights into the characteristics needed in our rigorous secondary school programme.
In their biology lesson they used an indicator to detect presence of sugar and starch in cookies, milk and potato. In Chinese Humanities the students explored theories behind continents.
In Visual Arts, grade 5 developed their team working skills and created a site specific art installation in response to important visual artists. They articulated their ideas and opinions confidently in English, and further developed their English vocabulary.
In their mathematics lesson the students explored probability. They did collaborative tasks and expanded their understanding of mathematical concepts in English. They completed mathematical experiments to find the differences between experimental probability and theoretical probability. They explored some math rules in calculation, expanding their understanding and engaging their curiosity in the subject.
The students got a taster of our range of lunchtime clubs. They had a choice between table tennis, photography and drama. They loved it.
At their break time and lunch time they were accompanied by our student ambassadors and some of our prefects. Michael Yang, our Head Boy, answered the Grade 5 questions on a range of questions including; how best to prepare for university, how to develop time management skills in the secondary school and how much homework to do students get. We even had an example of Japanese from a Grade 5 student as this will be offered as a 3rd language in our challenging and successful secondary school programme.
