Professor John Hattie, an eminent New Zealand Educational Researcher who is the Director of the Melbourne Educational Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia, is an expert on what things make a real difference to student learning. He completed a series of meta-analyses on research data into what effects student achievement.
His research is used world-wide to shape educational policy and help school leaders to best support learning in schools. Two of the effects he mentions are Classroom Discussion and Teacher Feedback.
Feedback involves the teacher modifying teaching or the learning plan in order to best support students learning. It often involves finding out what students can already do and what they need help with. Now that our teaching and learning is online, we are giving our students, often immediate feedback and shy students who don’t want to put up their hand can now confidently share their knowledge or questions in the class discussion forum. Teachers are also marking work digitally and giving students feedback in super quick time. Teachers are also able to digitally share examples of best practice so that students can see what an A* or Level 7 work looks like.
Through online learning, the students have to make their learning visible and share it. Through making their learning and thinking visible. Helping to support students developing of their thinking and self-assessment of their own work.
Another strong positive impact on student achievement is classroom discussions. Now that we are online, we have both audio and video discussions and some online discussion forums. These are also facilitating students to develop higher order thinking and to clarify understanding and share their expertise.
